Introduction
You are about to enter one of the most exciting times of your life, as a young woman who is embarking on the college application process. We at St. Mary’s Episcopal School take this challenge very seriously and have the resources to make this time stress-free and even enjoyable! This College Counseling Handbook is designed to give helpful assistance to you as you go through the college decision process. It is to be used in concert with Mrs. Grossman, Mrs. Thompson, Ms. Avant, Dr. Steakley, Dr. Ray, and the faculty at St. Mary’s.
Along with the college decision goes a great deal of responsibility, and that responsibility is yours. You are responsible for getting and completing the applications, for following instructions, for submitting secondary school reports and teacher recommendations in a timely and thoughtful manner, and for meeting deadlines. Remember, you are the most important person in this process. This is your decision. You are the one who will be attending the institution you choose; therefore, understanding and meeting your needs, desires and goals are critical to making a good decision. While using many people as resources, be sure to follow your own instincts.
There are many explanations, hints and suggestions in the following pages. Refer to them often. If there is something you don’t understand, please ask us. That is why we are here! The college decision process can be fun and exciting. This is your opportunity to decide the next step of your future. It is a chance to learn about colleges across the country, but more importantly, to learn about yourself. You are special and have talents and skills that make you unique. Remember, there is not just one school that is the perfect match for you. Explore all of your options and enjoy! We are here to support you in whatever way possible. Good luck!
