Pursuits After 3 Care

Our after school Pursuits program is available for students from St. Mary’s Place (2 years) through 4th grade starting the first day of school in August and continuing every day school is in session unitl the last class day in May. All children receive a snack and engage in a wide range of activities including indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts, reading, and free-time. After care is from 3:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. All students must be picked-up by 6:00.

Lower School students in grades 1st-4th have a designated homework time in a supervised, structured environment. We offer a variety of monthly care options to choose from.

St. Mary's Place Options

Special Care Days
St. Mary’s offers special care options for students in St. Mary’s Place* through 4th grade on certain days when regular school is not in session. Students will have recreation and craft time, play games, and watch movies. Snacks are provided, but students must bring a nut-free sack lunch. Cancellation policy is in effect if the minimum number of students is not met.

Readers Theater

Does your daughter love to read? So do we! Let her enjoy a community- building experience by meeting with friends to read and discuss books, increasing reading and listening comprehension as well as vocabulary and written response work. Discussions are student-led, and teacher-facilitated, and will include topics like character development, story themes, and structure. Groups and book selections are based on AR reading level.

Leap into Literacy

Reading Screenings
SK-4th Grade (St. Mary's students/boys and girls from other schools)
The Hughes Learning Center offers a reading screening to aid in determining a child’s risk for reading difficulties and to identify areas of strength and weakness. The screening can identify potential areas of reading difficulties as well as reading intervention strategies. This screening is NOT a full reading assessment nor a substitute for a Psychoeducational Evaluation. Parents will receive an informal written observation with recommendations. If a tutor is recommended and retained through the Hughes Learning Center, progress monitoring will be provided as needed.

From multi-sensory instruction to executive functioning, emergent reading skills to college essay writing, in almost any subject, we can pair your student with a tutor whose goal is to instruct, practice, and encourage independent skills.

Intro to Photography

In this new class, learn storytelling and creative photography techniques as well as technical skills. Students will learn about the history of photography, the types of photography that exist today, and how to create photographs with emotion and creativity. The girls will need to bring a camera or iphone to each class for taking pictures. Disposable cameras will be provided.

Kindermusik

Our ten week semester offers so much for our students! In this three week class, students will learn the basics of clay hand building. Students will complete one clay project from forming the clay with their hands to learning painting techniques and/or using specialty pottery glazes. At the end of the session we will have a gallery showing for the students to reveal their scultpures to their friends and families.

MUSIC CONSERVATORY

St. Mary’s is pleased to offer several options for private music lessons to our students and families. Suzuki violin, piano, voice, and guitar lessons are available. Students taking music lessons after school may stay in the after care program free of charge until their lesson time and will receive a snack, enjoy recreation, and older girls will have a designated homework time. Siblings are also welcome to take lessons at St. Mary’s. Each teacher manages his/her own schedule, so please contact him/her directly regarding availability and fees.

Suzuki Violin

More than fifty years ago, Japenese violinist Shinichi Suzuki began to apply basic principles of language acquisition to the learning of music. He called his method the ‘mother-tongue’ approach.

Parent Involvement: Parents attend lessons with the child and serve as “home teachers” during the week. One parent often learns to play so that s/he understands what the child is expected to do. Parents work with the teacher to create an enjoyable learning environment.

Basketball 101

Hip Hop
1st-4th Grade
Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore, class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements. There will be a recital on the last day of class as well as an optional recital held at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital’s Christmas Program.

In this class, students will learn the beautiful art of classical ballet with a creative and fun syllabus designed by Mary Van Dyke, Artistic Director of Children’s Ballet Theater. The theme this semester is the Nutcracker. There will be a parent demonstration on the final day of class for each session and JK-SK can perform in the annual Children’s Ballet Theater Nutcracker on the GPAC stage! Students should wear school clothing and bring ballet slippers; tutus are provided.

Yoga at St. Mary’s is integrative learning that uses storytelling, music, and creative arts blended with yoga movement to educate the whole child. Yoga helps to increase focus, concentration, and attention span.

Karate

It is never too early to learn self-defense. Come learn from a 7th degree black belt and an 8th degree black belt associated under the PaSaRyu System. Students in this course will concentrate on focus, voice, balance, and much more.

Turkey Striders
2nd-4th Grade
This conditioning and introduction to running class will help prepare our young turkeys for future athletics by teaching them how to run plus build their strength and flexibility. Our goal is to improve fitness levels by emphasizing running/ walking as a fun activity that can be enjoyed now and throughout life. There are three options for the class.

1) Use the class to learn and improve fitness
2) Use the class to train for the St. Jude 5K
Coach Hensarling will make an easy to follow training plan for the runner and/or parent **
3) Use the class to log miles fo the St. Jude Kids half-marathon. If you choose this opiton, the runners run 12.1 miles in any increment prior to race day and run the last mile with a parent on the race day itself. **

For girls and boys entering grades 11th and 12th
This class provides comprehensive reviews of math, science and verbal skills necessary for taking the ACT. Students also learn test taking strategies and complete practice tests during the class. All materials and practice tests provided.

PSAT Prep
For girls and boys entering grades 10th and 11th

Math
This class provides practice for taking the PSAT with an emphasis on refreshing algebra and geometry skills using word problems and data interpretation; test-taking techniques are explored and actual PSATs will be given. All materials for this class are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.


Verbal
This class provides practice for all parts of the verbal PSAT including sentence completion, critical reading, and grammar. Students use actual PSATs to familiarize themselves with the format and the content of the test; preliminary diagnostic and final PSATs will measure each student’s progress. All materials for this class are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.

Click here to register for a class online. When you click “register”, you will be directed to our online registration system Ultra Camp. If you haven’t done so before, please create a complete profile for you and your student. You can register for classes, as well as make payments through this site. To register for Pursuits After 3 Care and Masterminds, you must contact Kacie O’Kelley (Pursuits Business Manager) at kokelley@stmarysschool.org or 901-537-1415 for registration and to make payment.


COURSE FEES

A $25 deposit per class is required for registration. The $25 per-class deposit is applied toward the total class fee; it is not an additional fee. The deposit reserves a space for you child, and the remaining balance is due by the start date of the class. All deposits are non-refundable. The Pursuits program accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, as well as checks and cash. St. Mary’s classes will not be prorated for any reason. Classes with insufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation with a full refund. Advance notice will be provided to those registered.


BEHAVIORAL POLICY

Students are expected to adhere to the policies of St. Mary’s Episcopal School. We reserve the right to dismiss from the program (without refund) any student whose behavior beomes unmanagable.


PICK-UP AUTHORIZATION

Only adults designated on the registration form will be allowed to pick up children from the program. Written authorization is required for pick up from someone other than those listed on the registration form. The parent or authorized adult to whom the child is being released must sign the child’s time sheet and record the time.


LATE FEE/PICK-UP POLICY

It is important that students be picked up promptly at the end of their classes. Children not picked up within 15 minutes of the end of class will be checked into Pursuits and charged a drop in fee.

Students need to be picked up by 6:00 p.m. from After 3 Pursuits Care and Masterminds. Parents will be charged a fee of $2 per minute for the first 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, a late fee of $5 per minute will be charged. All late fees must be paid at the time of pick-up. If a student is picked up late more than three times in a semester. St. Mary’s reserves the right to dismiss that student from the Pursuits program.
