In Lower School, specialist teachers collaborate with our talented classroom teachers to create a dynamic environment designed to engage and ignite young girls' minds.
Our fourth grade girls recently studied inventors and simple machines in science and language arts classes. Working in groups, they brainstormed invention ideas to solve problems around them. North Campus Curriculum Director Jessica Lancaster led the students through the engineering design process. Each group sketched their design and listed the resources needed to create their project. They spent several days in the Makerspace building a prototype for their inventions.
The project culminated with a Shark Tank-type experience, where each group pitched their idea and prototype to a panel of judges. Projects were judged based on the best use of a simple machine, pitch, creativity, and group work. Some of the pitches included a cool-down machine and a portable cubby. Such a creative project!
