Alumnae Return to Lead Summer Camp

What’s the secret ingredient behind the magic of Summer at St. Mary’s? It's the counselors – and more than 75 percent of them are proud St. Mary’s alumnae and current students!

This summer, Director of Auxiliary Programs Jenny Madden hired 12 alumnae and four current students out of the 21 counselors to guide and lead the fun-filled summer program. These leaders, ranging from fresh graduates of the Class of 2024 to young women who recently finished college, exemplify the deep-rooted love and loyalty that St. Mary’s fosters in its students.

“I love bringing alumnae back to St. Mary’s. They know and love this place. The campers feel a connection to their counselors, knowing they were once in their shoes,” Mrs. Madden said.

With the days packed full of dancing, crafts, and water activities, counselors Caroline O’Brien ’23 and Laura Isaacs ’21 love spending time in their old elementary school and having fun with the campers.

“I can still remember my counselors when I came to summer camp, and I looked up to them so much because they were older St. Mary’s girls,” shared Caroline. “I want to make that same impact on these kids.”

Laura is reminded daily of her summer camp days at St. Mary’s.

“I just love spending time with the girls. They are so joyful and fun, and they really make me nostalgic for when I was in their shoes as a camper,” Laura said.

What is St. Mary’s summer camp without St. Mary’s? Fortunately for Mrs. Madden, counselors arrive with a deep understanding of St. Mary’s values.

“The thing about St. Mary’s is it’s still the same. It’s still the Bridge to Caring. It’s still ‘Day by Day.’ I love hiring alumnae because they know what it means to be part of this community, and they come ready to serve our campers.,” said Mrs. Madden.

There are familiar faces all over campus this summer. More than 60 Middle and Upper School students will serve as interns over the summer. Also, teachers and coaches host creative and engaging camps all summer long, including Math Inquiry with Paige Leatherman, Let’s Lego! with Mary Clayton Garavelli, and PSAT/SAT prep with Jeff McCalla, Julie Bielskis, Caroline Goodman, and Michele Loden.
