April is School Library month and St. Mary's would like to recognize our outstanding James Frederick Smith Library Director, Cathy Evans. Cathy has played a critical role in creating the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) which is a suite of databases used by our students on a daily basis. Cathy has been a member of the TEL database selection committee, chair of the K-12 curriculum committee, chair of the training committee, and co-chair of the TEL Phase II steering committee. In addition to many other committee and board positions held over the years, Cathy has most recently served as an Independent School Representative on the American Association of School Librarians Board of Directors.
St. Mary's welcomed two Congressmen to campus last week in an effort to discuss the vital role school librarians play. Cathy said, "librarians are promoters of reading and lifelong learning but also technology integrators, teachers, and collaborators. Our goal is to weave information skills across the curriculum at all grade levels in conjunction with projects we co-develop with classroom teachers.
School Library Month is observed every April, and is a national initiative of the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association. School librarians are encouraged to host activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in transforming learning. School Library Month celebrates school libraries as approachable, equitable, and personalized learning environments necessary for every student's well-rounded education.
Thank you, Cathy, for your dedication to our library and the wealth of knowledge you provide to our students, faculty, and staff!
