Understanding the Value of Private School Education

Understanding the Value of Private School Education

Why More Families Are Choosing Independent Schools for a Purpose-Driven, Personalized Education

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. With so many options — public, charter, magnet, parochial, and independent — it can be difficult to know which environment will offer the best fit and foundation for your child’s future.

At St. Mary’s Episcopal School, we’re proud to be an independent school, and we know that designation comes with questions. What does “independent” really mean, and why do families choose this path?

Here are 6 things that set independent or private schools apart and why they’re worth the investment.

1. Mission-Driven Education

Independent schools are governed by their own boards of trustees and are free from government mandates or standardized curricula. This means they can stay true to a clear mission and purpose. At St. Mary’s, everything we do,  from academics to arts to character development, is rooted in our Episcopal values and commitment to educating girls with purpose and compassion. As the oldest independent school in Tennessee, proudly serving Memphis girls since 1847, we bring unmatched experience to shaping confident, curious, and capable young women.

Why it matters:
Students benefit from a cohesive, values-based education that reflects the school’s unique identity and priorities, not state testing requirements.

2. Smaller Class Sizes and Individual Attention

Independent schools often offer significantly smaller class sizes and lower student-teacher ratios than their public counterparts. The average student-to-teacher ratio in Memphis public school classrooms is 16 to 1. At St. Mary’s, our 8 to 1 ratio means every girl is known, supported, and celebrated as an individual. This creates space for meaningful relationships between students and teachers and ensures that each girl is reaching her individual potential.

Why it matters:
Personalized attention leads to stronger academic outcomes, better communication, and a learning experience tailored to your child’s strengths and interests.

3. Exceptional Teachers, Committed to Growth

Independent schools attract and retain passionate educators who are not only experts in their fields but are also deeply committed to their students’ growth. With access to ongoing professional development, innovative teaching practices, and a supportive community, faculty are empowered to be their best

At St. Mary’s, more than 70% of our faculty hold a master’s degree or higher, and 65% have been with us for more than five years. We’re proud to be a place where exceptional teachers choose to grow their careers, a school often described as a “career destination.”

Why it matters:
Your daughter learns from educators who love teaching and invest in every student’s success, inside and outside the classroom.

4. A Holistic Approach to Learning

Academics are just one part of the independent school experience. Character education, arts, athletics, leadership, service, and spiritual growth are all woven into the fabric of daily life at St. Mary’s. Independent schools nurture the whole child intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.

Why it matters:
Students grow into confident, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals, prepared not just for college, but for life.

5. A Strong, Supportive Community

Independent school communities are built on strong relationships among students, families, faculty, and alumnae. At St. Mary’s, families are active partners in their child’s education and become part of a vibrant network that supports each girl’s journey.

Why it matters:
Belonging builds confidence and lifelong friendships. Girls flourish in communities where they feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

6. Long-Term Outcomes That Matter

Graduates of independent schools consistently demonstrate higher academic achievement, increased civic engagement, and strong leadership skills. They’re more likely to feel prepared for college, make meaningful contributions to their communities, and pursue careers aligned with their passions.

Why it matters:
An independent school education offers a lasting impact, shaping students who think critically, act with integrity, and lead with heart.
