Why All-Girls Education Works: 4 Reasons It Makes a Lasting Difference

Discover the top benefits of an all-girls school and how St. Mary’s empowers girls to lead, grow, and thrive

By Hilary Davis Robinson ’90

When families explore school options for their daughters, one question often arises: What’s the value of an all-girls education? At St. Mary’s Episcopal School, we’ve seen the transformative power of a learning environment designed specifically for girls. Research backs it up, and more importantly, so do the voices and achievements of our students.

Here are four key reasons why all-girls schools work and help girls thrive.

1. A Learning Environment Built for Girls

Research shows that girls and boys often learn differently, and all-girls schools are intentionally designed with that in mind. From classroom dynamics to the types of questions asked, everything is tailored to how girls learn best. Without the pressure of gender-based expectations, girls are more likely to raise their hands, share their ideas, and take intellectual risks.

Traditionally male-dominated subjects, like STEM, become places where girls excel. Research from the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute shows that girls at single-sex schools report higher academic engagement and are significantly more likely to pursue STEM careers. They also score an average of 43 points higher on the SAT than their peers in coed schools.

At St. Mary’s, we don’t just support girls, we design every aspect of learning to help them lead, explore, and achieve.

2. Higher Self-Confidence and Empowerment

When girls are seen, supported, and celebrated, their confidence soars. In an all-girls environment, students are more likely to speak up, take healthy risks, and persist through challenges. At St. Mary’s, we prioritize character development alongside academics. Our curriculum encourages critical thinking, resilience, and a growth mindset. Girls learn to advocate for themselves and others, not just in theory, but in practice.

Studies consistently show that girls in single-sex schools report greater confidence in their academic abilities and a stronger sense of self. They’re also more likely to feel prepared for academic and social interactions in college, including in coed settings.

3. Leadership Is the Norm, Not the Exception

At an all-girls school, every leadership opportunity is designed for girls because every role belongs to them. Girls lead from day one, whether it's running for student council, leading a robotics team, joining an athletic team, or organizing a community service project.

Leadership development is embedded throughout the St. Mary’s experience, beginning in early childhood and expanding with each grade. Students gain the confidence and resilience needed to take charge in the classroom, on stage, and in the world.

Research shows that girls from all-girls schools are more likely to hold leadership roles in college and beyond. They also express stronger civic awareness, set more ambitious goals, and see themselves as future leaders. At St. Mary’s, we don’t just talk about leadership, we make it a lived experience.

4. Lifelong Friendships and a Culture of Belonging

The connections formed in an all-girls environment go far beyond friendship; they’re built on trust, encouragement, and shared purpose. At St. Mary’s, girls don’t just make friends, they create a lasting sisterhood in a place that feels like home.

This culture of belonging helps girls feel safe to be themselves. Free from social pressure, they can explore their interests, discover their strengths, and support one another. Collaboration and mutual respect are foundational, creating an uplifting environment where every girl is known and valued.

The result? Lifelong friendships and a deep-rooted sense of community follow our alumnae long after graduation.

The St. Mary’s Difference

An all-girls education isn’t just about what students learn; it’s about who they become. At St. Mary’s, we’re proud to offer a learning environment where girls lead boldly, grow confidently, and build lasting connections.
