Dr. Caroline Flynn Named St. Mary’s 14th Head of School
Dr. Caroline Flynn has been appointed as St. Mary’s Episcopal School’s 14th Head of School, effective July 1, 2027.
Dr. Flynn was selected following a comprehensive, eight-month national search led by the Board of Trustees and Search Committee, with significant input from faculty, staff, parents, alumnae, and students. More than 400 community members contributed to the leadership profile, helping to shape the priorities for the school’s next leader.
Dr. Flynn is the Principal (Head of School) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School (OLPH) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she has served for 6 years. During her tenure, she developed and implemented the school’s strategic plan, led its accreditation process, strengthened fundraising and endowment efforts, increased enrollment, and improved retention.
Dr. Flynn began her time at OLPH as Academic Dean and was promoted to Principal after one year. Prior to that, she held multiple leadership roles at Girls Preparatory School in Chattanooga, including Dean of the Ninth Grade, Director of the Lacrosse Program, and a member of the Founders Fellows Leadership Development Program.
“Dr. Flynn brings a rare combination of proven academic leadership, deep experience in girls education, and a genuine connection to our Episcopal identity. Throughout the search process, she stood out for her clarity of vision, her ability to build meaningful relationships, and her commitment to developing determined, thoughtful young women. We are confident she is the right leader to guide St. Mary’s into its next chapter,” said Chair of the Board of Trustees Susan Graber.
A graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, an all-girls school in Pennsylvania, Dr. Flynn brings both personal and professional experience in girls education. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in International and Global Relations from The University of the South (Sewanee) and holds both a Master of Education in Independent School Leadership and a Doctor of Education from Vanderbilt University.
“From my first visit to St. Mary’s, I was struck by the school’s warmth, sense of belonging, and culture of academic curiosity, which are all hallmarks of an exceptional all-girls education. St. Mary’s distinctive balance of tradition and academic excellence prepares girls not only for college but for lives of purpose and impact. I look forward to partnering with Albert Throckmorton during this transition and to working alongside the talented faculty and staff to build on the school’s strong foundation. I am excited to become part of the St. Mary’s community and its next chapter,” Dr. Flynn shared.
Dr. Flynn will succeed Albert Throckmorton, who will retire after 15 years of dedicated leadership. A year-long transition is planned to ensure continuity and a strong start for the school’s next chapter.
