Removing the Weight of Expectation, Putting Strength in Perspective

Removing the Weight of Expectation, Putting Strength in Perspective

When searching the internet for motivational posters to hang in the Strength and Conditioning Center, Strength and Conditioning Specialist Coach Claire Betti was reminded of how toxic and harmful health and fitness culture can be. She quickly became disappointed with the results she was receiving. "Everything I found online promoted unrealistic body standards, was based on comparisons to others, or embraced a 'no pain no gain' mentality. These weren't the messages I wanted my students to see every day."

Instead of settling for what was available, Coach Claire turned the problem into a creative opportunity. Collaborating with Director of Counseling and Upper School Counselor Amy Poag, she challenged her students to design posters that would truly motivate and inspire themselves and each other. Group discussions allowed students to share what they struggled with most in fitness spaces. They expressed a desire to see more motivation related to positive body image, encouragement, and positive self-talk; messages that would build them up rather than tear them down.

The assignment resonated deeply with students, who brought energy, artistry, and authenticity to the project. The resulting posters feature messages like "I can't… yet," "Sore today, stronger tomorrow," "You can do hard things," "You've got this girl," and "Be your best self for yourself."

Walk into the Strength and Conditioning Center at St. Mary's today, and you'll immediately notice the difference: the walls are now adorned with colorful, handwritten posters, each decorated with empowering drawings and messages that reflect the culture of the Strength and Conditioning Center. "Encouragement, personal growth, and supporting each other are what we want to represent, not comparison or unrealistic standards," Coach Claire said.

This project exemplifies St. Mary's holistic wellness program, which nurtures students' physical, emotional, and social health. By empowering students to create an environment that promotes healthy self-talk and mutual support, Coach Claire and Ms. Poag are helping girls embrace their strengths, build resilience, and advocate for themselves and others. This assignment is more than just decorating a strength and conditioning center; it prepares girls to become resilient, confident leaders in all areas of life, ensuring that each student has the tools and support she needs to thrive.
