How Athletics Empowers Girls to Grow in Confidence, Character, and Community

By Caroline Duncan, Sports Information Coordinator

At St. Mary’s Episcopal School, we know that girls thrive when given the opportunity to lead, grow, and discover their full potential. That’s why athletics isn’t just an extracurricular activity — it’s a vital part of our mission to educate the whole girl. From the first tryout to the final whistle, sports offer high school girls powerful lessons that last a lifetime.

1. Confidence that Carries Over

Whether she’s stepping onto the field for the first time or leading the varsity team, a girl who plays sports builds confidence through every practice, challenge, and comeback. In an all-girls environment, student-athletes are encouraged to take risks and learn from mistakes in a space that’s empowering and judgment-free. That confidence doesn’t end with the season — it shows up in the classroom, on the stage, and in every part of life.

2. Discipline and Time Management

High school students juggle a lot — classes, homework, friendships, family, and more. Being part of a team teaches girls how to manage their time wisely and stay accountable to others. With teammates counting on them, athletes learn to show up, follow through, and balance their responsibilities with purpose.

3. Lifelong Wellness Habits

Athletics at St. Mary’s encourages more than physical strength. Our programs promote healthy eating, mental well-being, injury prevention, and self-care. These habits form the foundation for a balanced life—and a belief that strength, both mental and physical, comes from within.

4. A Team That Feels Like Family

Girls’ sports build powerful friendships rooted in trust, encouragement, and mutual respect. In our all-girls teams, athletes lift each other up—celebrating victories, learning from losses, and showing up for one another on and off the field. These experiences foster empathy, communication, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the scoreboard.

5. Opportunities for the Future

Student-athletes often stand out in college admissions for their dedication, teamwork, and leadership. Sports can also lead to scholarships, recruitment, and lifelong involvement in athletics. More importantly, girls who compete in high school sports gain the grit, focus, and confidence needed to chase big goals in college, careers, and beyond.

Athletics at St. Mary’s: Confidence in Motion

At St. Mary’s, athletics is more than competition; it’s character in motion. Our teams are built on integrity, effort, and community. Whether she’s a seasoned athlete or trying a sport for the first time, every girl finds a place to shine. With over 11 unique sports, we offer a range of opportunities for girls to grow stronger in body, mind, and spirit.
