Brave Explorers Take On Québec City

St. Mary's Girls Deepen Friendships in Quebec

POV: You just returned from a winter wonderland with your besties!

A group of 7th and 8th-grade students just returned from an unforgettable four-day adventure in Québec City, where they learned nuances of the Québécois culture, represented St. Mary's as incredible international ambassadors, and forged deep friendships with each other.

The trip, offered by St. Mary's Global Studies Department, included guided city tours, visits to First Nations villages, and, of course, two nights at the lively Carnaval de Québec. Along the way, they impressed their chaperones with their maturity and respect for the local culture.

"The girls who went on this educational adventure were nothing short of impressive," said Middle School French teacher Leanne Hinkle. "They demonstrated an appreciation and compassion for the cultures in Québec. This will stay with them longer than any textbook lesson."

The students also made a lasting impact on those around them. Middle School PE teacher Kari Duncan, another chaperone, shared, "We might have received some 'looks' from people wary of a large group of Middle Schoolers, but those 'looks' always turned into compliments later. The girls were respectful, inclusive, and embraced every part of the trip."

While learning about the culture was a highlight, the students formed lasting bonds with one another.

"The best part was bonding with friends and getting closer to classmates," said Faryal Ahmad '30. "Not many Middle Schoolers get to go on international trips like this. We were very lucky to be visiting, and everything we did was fabulous."

The adventure also pushed some students out of their comfort zones. Middle School English Teacher and chaperone Crystal Spillyards said, "They were engaged and open to trying new experiences. A few girls were hesitant to ride the toboggan, but they faced their fears and loved it so much that they went a second time!"

Claire Do '29 agreed, "I didn't think I was going to be able to do the double black diamond at the snow park, but my friends were so supportive and helped me get through it."

For many, the trip was about the little moments spent with friends in a beautiful setting.

"Spending time in nature with friends and cherishing all the little moments was my favorite part," said Olivia Doyle '29. "It was a wonderful trip, and I'm really grateful for the experience!"

In just four days, these students learned, grew, and showed the world what it means to be global citizens. The next Middle School Global Destination will be guided tours of Amsterdam during Fall Break 2025. We can't wait to follow our explorers on another adventure!
