Welcome to Summer at St. Mary’s!

The Summer at St. Mary’s program offers a unique summer experience where children can learn, move, and play. Summer 2019 will feature the return of favorite programs such as Fine Motor Fun and our Reading and Writing Workshop as well as new offerings for our friends of all ages! Summer at St. Mary’s has options for every age, from Pre-K through College Prep, and is open to the community.

Munchkin & Day Camps

Munchkin Camps For girls and boys entering grades PK – SK

This unique experience for our youngest campers will be filled with many of the same fun activities as the big day camp but scheduled at their own pace. Munchkins learn through art, music, free-play, and storytelling. Campers will enjoy water play but will not go swimming. Each week has a different theme with dress up day on Wednesday and a special activity on Friday.

Day Camps For girls entering grades 1st – 7th

Every day is loaded with fun adventures from exploring nature, creating tasty treats, playing field games, cooling off with water play, and splashing in the pool. Whatever the activity, campers will delight in discovering new and exciting experiences and making new friends. Each camper belongs to a core group assigned by grade level that travels to activities with songs and smiles along the way.

Snacks are provided, but campers will need to bring a sack lunch each day. Students are transported by bus daily to the swimming pool where certified lifeguards ensure safety. Our trained activity leaders keep campers smiling with new projects. Campers will remember their group leaders for years to come. Each week of camp has a different theme with dress up day on Wednesday and a special activity on Friday.


Half Day Camp Options For girls entering grades 1st – 7th and SK boys

Campers will join our core groups of full day campers for the morning or afternoon and participate in all the fun activities offered in these fun filled weeks. Campers will make crafts, go swimming, play games, cook a tasty treat, and much more as we celebrate a different theme each week.

Academic Camps

Advanced VEX Robotics For girls and boys entering grades 5th-7th

The Advanced VEX IQ Robotics Camp is ideal for students who enjoy problem-solving and want to develop interpersonal skills through working in a collaborative team setting. Do you like the mechanics and engineering of making things work? How about the thought of designing robots? Do you enjoy competition? Are you a hands-on learner? Students will have fun building robots and competing in robotics missions.

Working in small teams, students use the VEX IQ robotics system to build a robot to compete in fun real-world challenges ending with a VEX Scrimmage.  Advanced students will have the opportunity to learn about building complex robotic sensors, robot arms, drive trains, and programming "smarter" robots.

Beginner VEX Robotics For girls and boys entering grades 4th-5th

The Beginner VEX IQ Camp is ideal for students who enjoy problem-solving and want to develop interpersonal skills through working in a collaborative team setting. Join us for a week of fun fine motor activities. Campers will participate in activities to strengthen fine motor control, like practicing pencil grip, scissor control, tracing names, drawing self-portraits, and playing games! Campers will also bring home activities they can enjoy all summer long. All activities are differentiated depending on the campers' age and ability.

Whip Up Some STEAM For girls and boys entering grades 1st – 6th

Mix it up in the kitchen with equal parts cooking, taste-testing, and learning the science behind the foods you eat!  Sugar crystal lollipops, monster marshmallows, and building a DIY solar oven for s'mores are just a sample of what we'll be making this summer!  All supplies included.

Spy Science For girls and boys entering grades 2nd – 6th

Campers will learn the science behind everything spy in a clever mix of chemistry, physics, and biology. Their activities include dusting for fingerprints, using microscopes to analyze evidence, extracting DNA and writing in invisible ink. They will even build intruder alarms and learn to crack secret codes. This camp is a perfect fit for super-spies and scientists alike! Become a secret spy and take a fascinating journey into the world of forensic science. Don’t forget to bring the perfect disguise!!!

Auditory Comprehension & Metacognitive Skills: The Language of Listening For girls and boys entering grades SK-2nd

In a creative and fun-filled atmosphere, children will be taught self-initiated thinking strategies as well as direct listening practice to improve their abilities to attend and listen in a group setting. Listening tasks include how to engage in conversation, follow directions, and understand stories. Metacognitive tasks include self-monitoring classroom behavior and social group skills. Brief observational summaries will be emailed home the week following camp.

Coding Cadets: Bootcamp for Coders For girls and boys entering grades 1st - 5th

Attention!!! Left, right, left, right, left, right! This bootcamp is sure to shape up the coolest coder in your family.  Campers do not need any previous coding skills to be a successful boot camp participant. We will work on topics such as binary coding, coding robots, coding games, coding each other to move, Morse code, and more.  Campers will work on daily coding projects and work with multiple types of robots. Students will use programmable floor robots, AGV robots, and Lego robots throughout the week. Creativity and engineering skills will be sharpened, along with all activities being STEM based each day.   These experiences are designed to build interest, knowledge, and technical skills the campers can take with them into the classroom and beyond. Girls Who Code For girls entering grades 2nd - 6th

Join us for lots of sugar “coded” fun each day as we code and have fun exploring STEM, STEAM, and STREAM coding in this all-girls club. Girls will participate in a variety of different coding experiences, such as fashion shows with coding on the catwalk, creating jewelry through coding, amazing robotic challenges, and more. Our daily meetups enhance critical thinking skills, while building up self-confidence and teamwork all in a positive and enthusiastic learning environment. Early Literacy For girls and boys entering JK – SK

Not old enough to attend the reading and writing workshops? This workshop is tailored for pre-emergent readers! The action-packed week focuses on key foundational literacy skills like rhyming, letter and sound relationships, syllables, and more! Exciting multi-sensory techniques are used to engage campers. Following the center model, campers will rotate through small group, teacher-led centers that focus on early literacy foundational skills. At the end of the workshop, campers will be given a brief observational summary regarding their progress as well as suggestions for activities that support their early literacy skills growth.

Reading/Writing Workshop For girls and boys entering grades 1st – 5th

1st and 2nd grades workshop description:

New this year, we are expanding our well-known summer reading workshop to include writing practice and handwriting instruction! This one-week workshop is designed to meet the needs of the emergent reader needing remediation as well as the independent, fluent reader seeking enrichment. Individualized instruction will help develop your child’s contextual reading, word study, and fluency reading as well as small group discussions that build text comprehension, word attack skills, and vocabulary are all part of the daily routine. Small group instruction will also include handwriting, journaling, and sentence mechanics.

3rd through 5th grades workshop description:

New this year, we are expanding our well-known summer reading workshop to include instruction in creating written responses to both fiction and non-fiction texts. During the one-week session, your student will be developing deep understanding of academic vocabulary definitions and applications; read, discuss, and analyze poetry; participate in fictional literature discussions about character development, author’s viewpoint, story structure; and receive explicit instruction on how to analyze information in non-fiction texts. Instruction will include the draft and editing process for written work.

Get ready for the start of school with this general math review. Using a math-centered model, this course is designed to review current math skills and prepare students for the upcoming school year. A low student-teacher ratio encourages each student to build individual skills and receive problem-solving practice in a structured environment. Students will work on building number sense, math facts automaticity, spatial awareness, math vocabulary, and more.

Academic Reviews For girls and boys entering grades 6th-8th

Jumpstart the upcoming academic year with these one-week courses that benefit students who want to review grade-level skills in math, reading, grammar, writing, and study skills.

Cost: $100 for each section or $450 for all five sections

Note: Supervised area is provided for students to bring a lunch and/or to rest between classes.  Any student waiting for a class must report to supervised area.


Grammar Skills Review Grade 6th

Brush up on your grammar skills! This class focuses on grammar basics: parts of speech, sentence structure, and usage. individual instruction will allow students to receive personal attention in specific skill areas.

This course provides a review of the core skills needed for rising 6th grade students.  Those include: decimal, fraction, and integer operations as well as basic algebraic equations and word problems.

Improve your grades and make study time more efficient! learn mind-mapping techniques to improve note-taking skills and writing capabilities in this class. College Prep Camps

SAT Prep Workshop For girls and boys entering grades 11th–12th

Math
Get a boost before taking the SAT with this algebra and geometry skills refresher using word problems and data interpretation. Practice test-taking techniques throughout the course and take an actual SAT. All materials are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.

Verbal
This class provides practice for all parts of the verbal SATs: sentence completion, critical reading, grammar, and essay writing. The course also includes daily vocabulary building and test-taking strategies using actual SATs. Preliminary diagnostic and final SATs will measure each student’s progress. All materials are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.

PSAT Prep Workshop For girls and boys entering grades 9th - 10th

Math
This one-week class provides practice for taking the PSaT with an emphasis on refreshing algebra and geometry skills using word problems and data interpretation; test-taking techniques are explored and actual PSaTs will be given. All materials for this class are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.

Verbal
This one-week class provides practice for all parts of the verbal PSaT including sentence completion, critical reading, and grammar. Students use actual PSaTs to familiarize themselves with the format and the content of the test; preliminary diagnostic and final PSaTs will measure each student’s progress. All materials for this class are provided to the student, and practice testing will be a part of the class.

This class provides comprehensive reviews of math, science, and verbal skills necessary for taking the ACT.  Students also learn test taking strategies and complete practice tests during the class. Students need to bring the calculator they plan on using for the exam and writing utensils; all other materials and practice tests will be provided.

College Application/Essay Workshop For girls and boys entering grades 11th – 12th

Do you need help with completing college applications, putting together a resume, and practicing interview skills? The summer is a great time to get a jump start on your college process while free from the stress of schoolwork and daily activities! St. Mary’s College Counselors will guide students step by step through the Common application, provide advice on the college application process, assist students with the completion of a college resume, and fine tune interview skills.  Students will also get help with writing impressive college essays before school starts and have a stress-free fall semester. This workshop offers instruction in writing a personal essay and provides feedback to each student. Come get expert advice and start the school year ahead of the curve!

Soar into SK

Flip into First Grade

Welcome to the Lower School! Come join first grade friends in a class that will help them get ready for a great first grade year. This class will review basic math and language arts skills as well as help your daughter become acclimated to life in the lower School. Flip into First grade is designed for the class of 2030 and will have your daughter ready to hit the ground running when she starts school in august.

This camp, designed for the class of 2027, will review both math and language arts skills We will review best homework practices, study skills, and organizational tools necessary for a successful fourth grade year. Flourish in Fifth Grade

Pottery & More For girls and boys entering grades SK - 8th

In this hands on camp, campers will get to use their imagination to design and create colorful projects throughout the week. Each day of camp will be assigned a color theme where campers will use clay, paper mache, mosaic tiles, and more to help their designs transform into creative masterpieces. This is the perfect camp for all ages. Projects will be based on grade level.

Colorful Creations For girls entering grades 1st - 5th

It’s time to get crafty. This camp will be full of color and imagination as each camper will get to make one unique craft per day. They will design and paint bulletin boards, use washi and duct tape to make fun accessories, and get real colorful with crayons to make melted crayon artwork and so much more.

Interior Design/Dollhouse For girls and boys entering grades 1st - 5th

Make your very own dollhouse! We will start with a wooden base. We will then spend each day painting our house, designing wallpaper, making our own furniture, rugs, dolls, artwork for the house, etc. Great for girls and boys!

Fashion Drawing/Fabrics For girls and boys entering grades 1st - 5th

In this camp, students will have fun exploring the basics of fashion design. We’ll learn how to sketch clothes, put together inspiration boards, and experiment with fabric. We’ll design our own fabric swatches using tie­ dye, embroidery and painting. Kids will spend the week designing & drawing their very own mini collection on boards.

The Art of Equality For girls and boys entering grades 6th-8th

Throughout the week we will explore the lives and works of famous female artists and scrutinize their paths to fame. We will create our own works of art inspired by the methods and styles of the artists we study. This camp is perfect for anyone who likes discovering new techniques, getting messy in the art studio and letting creativity run wild.

Musical Theater: “Oompa Loompas Doomity Dee!” For girls entering grades PK-SK

This camp, presented by Memphis Youth Musical Theater, will delight children as they learn two scenes from their favorite “Willie Wonka”. Each day begins with a dance warm – up – Broadway style! After that, campers learn songs, dances, and speaking parts from the show. The camp ends with a show for parents. Each day, students will have outdoor recreation time. Girls should wear leggings or shorts with t – shirt, socks, and slip-on or velcro shoes each day. Please wear hair up and off the face. Students should also bring a water bottle and pre – apply sunscreen. Snack provided.

The Art Project: Art Freeplay For girls and boys entering grades PK-SK

In this camp, kids will get to use a wide variety of art mediums and techniques ­ painting, collage, watercolor, glue, drawing, clay and more. We’ll do lots of process based art projects and sensory play to keep it fun and messy! Kids will get their very own sketchbook to work on all week long and will bring home a portfolio of projects at the end of camp.

Carl Schmitt Soccer For girls and boys entering grades SK - 9th

At this camp, players will be taught the game of soccer in a nurturing and fun, yet challenging, environment. Players will experience components from the four pillars of the game of soccer (technical, tactical, physical, and psychological) with the main emphasis on developing the individual player. The last part of each day, players will participate in small sided games. Prizes will be awarded for campers of the week. Bring a soccer ball, shin guards, water, light snack, towel, outdoor soccer shoes, and indoor/ at shoes. All campers will receive a camp t-shirt and mini soccer ball.

Little Dribblers For girls and boys entering grades JK – 1ST

This camp is an awesome way for your young sports enthusiasts to be introduced to “dribbling” both in soccer and in basketball. Focusing on basic skills while emphasizing teamwork will be the two main goals of this camp. Each participant will receive a camp certificate upon completion. Little Ballerinas I: “Les Sylphides” Fairy Camp For girls entering grades PK-SK

In this camp, girls will learn the beautiful art of French and Russian classical ballet with a unique and fun syllabus designed by Children’s Ballet Theater director Mary Van Dyke. Included each day is ballet class, choreography from the ballet “Les Sylphide” featuring the beautiful music of Chopin, dress-up/fairy dance time, ballet story-time, playground, and arts/crafts. The camp ends with a parent show. Dancers need to wear a pink leotard, ballet skirt, ballet shoes, and bobby socks. Please also send slip-on or velcro shoes for outside. Hair in a ponytail or bun. This camp is perfect for all newcomers to volleyball or players with little experience. Hip hop is a high-energy camp that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. This camp will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their individual style and personality to the movements. hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore, class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a vigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements. There will be a recital on the last day of camp.

Learn basic bowling skills such as approach, delivery, and follow-through from the head coach of St. Mary’s Bowling team. Topics will include choosing the right weight ball, coordinating hand and foot motion, aim, and scoring. This camp will be held at Billy Hardwick’s All Star Lanes. Transportation to and from this camp will not be provided by Summer at St. Mary’s staff.

With a program focused on developing a strong work ethic in all players, Hoop City Basketball Club encourages athletes to be responsible both on the court and out in the community.  Basketball players will learn good sportsmanship the old-fashioned way—by figuring out how to play as a team. Boys & girls can develop and master their basketball fundamentals & skills, shooting technique, improve discipline, and more during the four-day camp. Please bring a nut free sack lunch. Building A Better Memphis For girls entering grades 3rd – 6th

Kids can make a difference and it’s never too early to hear this message. In this camp, girls learn about issues that affect our beloved city and participate in meaningful, hands-on service to our community partners. We will, in an age-appropriate manner, examine issues of homelessness, food insecurity, animal rescue, and our environment. Campers will begin each day learning and discussing a specific issue, followed by a field trip to an organization that works with those affected by it. Students will participate in a service project each day, and have time to debrief with teachers afterward. This camp is guaranteed to change the way your child looks at the world and inspire her to make a difference in her community.

Small Hands, Big Hearts For girls entering grades 1st – 3rd

The Small hands, Big hearts camp offers a meaningful first service experience for younger children. Each day, we will discuss a “problem” and what children can do to make a difference. Speakers from community organizations will come to campus to share their stories, and each day we will complete a service project centered around the “problem of the day.”

Babysitter Certification For girls and boys ages 12 and up

Babysitter lessons and safety training is an important program for potential babysitters providing extensive training in pediatric first aid, household safety, and the fundamentals of childcare.  Students will learn how to handle choking and first aid basics for emergency response. At the end of this one day class, students will leave with a certificate of completion and certification card.  If your daughter participates in our day camp this week, our staff will handle transportation between campuses if needed.

Calling all young architects, engineers, and play aficionados.  Young campers will be amazed each day in our Tinkering TOTS lab.  We will build multiple structures each day that are large enough for the kids to fit inside, such as, wagons, helicopters, fire trucks, picnic tables, rockets, and so much more. Each day we will work with different themes, for instance, sports, transportation, camping, flying, and community helpers.  Without realizing it, campers will learn basic engineering, design, and architectural skills through building and connecting. Constructive play develops imagination, problem solving skills, and gross and fine motor skills. Spa Camp For girls entering grades 1st - 5th

Mix it, make it, try it out and take it home! This hands-on ALL GIRLS camp uses Spa activities to showcase Science and Art. Girls will make Fizzy Bath Bombs, Sweet Lip Smackers, Yummy Face Masks and more. They’ll become clever spa scientists for the week as they learn about ingredients and how to combine them to make fun (and fabulous!) pampering goodies. Each day will also include a daily Spa craft. They will experiment with packaging and naming their concoctions in this spa-chemistry exploration — the end of the week is “Spa Pajama Day,” where girls sample and share what they have made while wearing their favorite comfy pjs! It’s pure indulgence – and it’s Science!!!

Learn. Collaborate. Build.  Lego Camp provides participants with an exciting experience to discover and build through legos while tapping into their engineering abilities.  This camp will help boost confidence, creativity, and collaboration. GENERAL INFORMATION

To register online, please click here.  When you click “register”, you will be directed to our online registration system Ultra Camp. If you haven’t done so before, please create a complete profile for you and your camper. You can register for camps, as well as make payments through this site. You may also contact Kacie O’Kelley via e-mail or by phone at 901-537-1415 for any registration or payment questions.

A $50 deposit per-camp is required for registration. The $50 per-camp deposit is applied toward the total camp fee; it is not an additional fee. The deposit reserves a space for your child, and the remaining balance is due by the start date of the camp. All deposits are non-refundable. Summer at St. Mary’s accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express, as well as checks and cash.

St. Mary’s camps will not be prorated for any reason.

Please contact the Auxiliary Programs Office at 901-537-1415 if you need to cancel a camp in advance. A minimum 10 days notice must be given to receive a refund, less the non-refundable deposit.  Except in cases of illness or emergency that are disclosed to the Auxiliary Programs Office prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not given after a program begins. No refunds will be given for those students who choose not to attend class without their parents’ knowledge.  Confirmation of camp registration will be sent to you via email along with your class or camp locations. Confirmation email will show your balance, which MUST be paid by the start date of camp in order to attend. Classes with insufficient enrollment are subject to cancellation with a full refund. Advance notice will be provided to those registered.


BEHAVIORAL POLICY

Students are expected to adhere to the policies of St. Mary’s Episcopal School. We reserve the right to dismiss from the program (without refund) any student whose behavior becomes unmanageable.  Students and campers are not allowed to be unsupervised on campus and are expected to be neatly and properly dressed. The use or possession of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products is not allowed, and any students in possession of such items will be expelled from the program and the appropriate authorities will be contacted. No refund will be given.

Campers must be at least 3 years of age by June 1, 2019 and fully potty trained (even through nap time) in order to attend summer programs.  If more than three accidents occur within a week, St. Mary’s Auxiliary Programs may contact you to pick up your child from camp.


LATE FEES

Students need to be picked up promptly at the end of camp. Parents will be charged a fee of $2 per minute for the first 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, a late fee of $5 per minute will be charged. All late fees must be paid at the time of pick-up.
