"Keep the students in health of mind and soul and body........."
from St. Mary's School Prayer

St. Mary's counseling team is launching a NEW Mind, Soul, Body program for St. Mary's girls in all divisions and this year's theme is "One Little Thing."

Our goal is to teach students to be intentional about the little things they can do to practice self-care on a daily basis.

Next week, September 16-20, we will introduce the "one little thing" program to all St. Mary's girls. Below is a glimpse of happenings and resources the girls may experience on campus.

  • Daily self- care tip clips from the INSpire girls (INSpire is an upper school club that meets weekly to discuss Social, Emotional and Mental Health topics).  These videos will be sent to you each morning and can be shown at any point in the day.
  • Chapel on September 17: Nurse Judy and Mrs. Adrian will be speaking about "little things" to take care of your Mind, Body and Soul.
  • Guidance Lessons: Our girls will create "One Little Thing" goals and self-care tip sheets
  • Lower School girls will make positive affirmation cards to send to Upper School girls.
    • A bulletin board with self-care tips will be in the cafeteria for girls to use as a resource.

Grounding Exercises

Grounding Exercises for Students – One little thing you could do to regulate your emotions is to choose one grounding exercise a day.  These exercises help people remain in the present moment and distract you from entering the red zone.

Counseling Team

Girls go through so many changes physically, cognitively, and emotionally during their educational journeys. The counseling program aims to assist our girls with the challenges and opportunities each stage of development brings. We do this by helping each girl understand herself and the changes going on within and around her. Our goal is to help each girl reach her individual potential and equip her to be successful personally, academically, and professionally in the future. The counseling team provides student support services through one-on-one interactions, group discussions, lessons in a classroom and supplemental programming during free class periods. Common topics include the following:

Identifying personal needs

Effective communication

Recognizing and cultivating healthy relationships

Empathy training

Conflict resolution

Managing anxious thoughts and stress management

Time management 


Self-esteem, self-awareness, and self-compassion

Finding your voice

Substance prevention

"In the lower school years, each girl is increasing her awareness of self and others. The lower school counseling program is designed to equip each student with a better understanding of her own needs and provide healthy coping strategies for all life brings her way. This is done through classroom guidance lessons, small group discussions, and individual counseling time. Classroom guidance topics are focused on the girls' social and emotional development and are determined by student need and teacher or parent feedback.  Students are seen individually after a parent, teacher, or self-referral."

"The pre-teen and early teen years are ones of growth and transition. This is an exciting, but sometimes stressful time in a girl’s life marked by many physical, emotional and social changes. The goal of the counseling and wellness program in the middle school is to help our girls navigate these changes while offering support and strategies to be successful in each stage of development. In Middle School, we build upon concepts learned in Lower School and continue to discuss topics such as stress management, conflict resolution, organization skills, identifying learning styles and study habits, mindfulness, self-esteem and body image, emotional well-being, and substance prevention. Our goal is to build a strong foundation for our girls as they transition into adolescence."

"The high school years are filled with demands on girls' lives academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. The Upper School Counseling program strives to come alongside and support our students as they learn to balance competing pulls on their time and energy.  Through classroom guidance, special programs, small group, and individual meetings, students continue to build strong social competency, emotional resilience, and self-advocacy skills. The counseling team works collaboratively with faculty, students, and their families to meet each student where she is and to provide individual intervention, crisis support, and referrals to the outside mental health community if needed."
