Global Education Program

Explore the World

The Global Education program helps students become more globally-minded individuals with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Through a global-focused curriculum, girls are inspired to take action to better themselves, their community, and their world. Upper School students can engage in Global Education programming through multiple offerings: the Global Scholars program, travel opportunities, semester courses, and co-curricular activities including guest speakers and book clubs.

Global Scholars

Through the Global Scholars program, students learn about international and domestic issues through coursework, co-curricular activities, and experiences. Participation in the Global Scholars program encourages the development of key global competencies such as the ability and desire to investigate the world, recognize perspectives, communicate ideas, and take action. Beyond the academic coursework, students participate in globally-aligned co-curricular activities, community service, and a capstone project.

The SMS Global Scholars Certificate will be awarded to Upper School students who have dedicated a significant part of their Upper School experience to engaging in globally-aligned coursework while participating in co-curricular activities and experiences that encourage the development of global competencies. This prestigious distinction will reward students willing to extend their global learning process both within and outside of the classroom.

As defined by The Asia Society, global competencies exist in four domains:

  • Investigate the World,

  • Recognize Perspectives,

  • Communicate Ideas, and

  • Take Action.

Semester Courses

Upper School courses are designed to encourage a global perspective and enhance a global lens on current and historical events. Current sourse offerings include Global Issues I-IV and Facing History & Ourselves.

Travel Opportunities

The Global Education program offers three travel experiences to Upper School students each year. While exploring a domestic or international destination, students will learn about the history and culture of the destination through a curated and immersive experience. Upcoming travel destinations include:

  • Poland & Germany
  • Spain
  • Chicago

Global Scholars Application

I applied for the Global Scholars program because I felt it was important to have increased awareness and understanding of other cultures and ways of life. Being part of this program helps me develop a global perspective that I can apply to everyday life now, when I go to college, and when I enter the workforce.  Wallis, Global Scholar program participant
