Why Should I Donate Stock to St. Mary’s? 
Donating appreciated stock is one of the smartest and easiest ways to give to
St. Mary’s. 

You can give more
By donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are actually giving 20 percent more than if you sold the stock and donated the proceeds because in doing so, you avoid capital gains taxation on the earnings. Plus, you are still eligible to deduct the full fair-market value of the asset you donated from your income taxes, up to the overall amount allowed by the IRS. 

You can potentially reduce future capital gains
Many investors hold stocks they love for the long term, which confirms their belief in it, but it can also set the stage for substantial gains when the shares are sold. Consider donating some of your appreciated shares to St. Mary’s and then buy new shares at the current price, resetting your cost basis and reducing your future capital gains tax exposure if the stock continues to grow in value. 

How it works
Assume you are a $1,000 annual donor to St. Mary’s and that you bought two shares of a stock in 2012 that has appreciated from $100 per share to $500 per share. You will be taxed on the $400 earnings if you sell the shares, but if you direct two shares to St. Mary’s, you will avoid paying capital gains tax and you can repurchase shares of the same stock with the $1,000 cash you had planned to donate to the school, thereby resetting your cost basis.  

Please contact Carrie Vaughan, Director of Advancement to advise her that you will be transferring shares of stock to St. Mary’s brokerage account at UBS Financial Services, Inc. Please provide the type of stock and the number of shares you plan to donate. You will need the following information when you contact your broker to request the transfer:
